Campaign Profile: Mayors Against Illegal Guns

In April 2006, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino hosted a meeting attended by 15 mayors from around the country who were concerned about gun violence. Now, Mayors Against Illegal Gun Violence has grown to a coalition of 250 and is making waves. Recently, their effort to repeal the Tiahrt Amendment--a measure designed to restrict the public and law enforcement from accessing gun trace information held by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives--has come under fire by the NRA and the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the lobbying arm of the gun industry. Top Republican fund raiser Senator Richard Shelby has led the legislative effort to withhold gun data from law enforcement agencies
